Humane Society
The AHS is the oldest private charitable organization in
Atlanta, founded in 1873 following a visit to the city
by Robert E. Lee. The Society was originally chartered
to protect women, children and animals and remained a child
protection and animal welfare society for 79 years. The
AHS extends compassion to animals and people. Services
and programs include: animal intake and care, adoptions,
education, advocacy, consultation and crises intervention,
food bank, hospital/clinic, rescue, resource for social
service agencies, and support of the indigent. The Society,
the only agency providing such extensive and focused animal
welfare services in the Southeast, serves its constituency
